Why it matters here

Frame inspections on Clyde North builds

Two storey frames dominate our Clyde North work, and they fail in specific ways: speed bracing in the roof left slack, a coach screw where the detail implies a bolt, a single stud under a girder truss, studs cut out to fit a meter box. None of it is visible once the plasterboard goes up, which is why this is the inspection that most often changes what the builder does next.

What we find at this stage in Clyde North

  • Roof speed bracing not tensioned
  • Coach screws in place of a bolted connection
  • Girder truss bearing on a single stud
  • Studs cut around the meter box
  • Honeycombing along the slab edge

FAQ

Frame inspections in Clyde North: common questions

What does slack speed bracing do?

Speed bracing only resists racking when it is tight. Bent or loose, it lets the roof move under wind before the brace takes any load.

Why does a girder truss need two studs?

A girder collects load from other trusses and delivers it to one point. A doubled or tripled stud carries that concentrated load down to the slab.

Is honeycombing at the slab edge a frame issue?

It is a slab issue we can only see at frame stage, once the formwork is stripped. Deep honeycombing can expose steel and let water in, so it needs repair before brickwork.

How many hours does a frame inspection need?

Two to three hours, longer on a double storey with a complex roof.

Do you need the engineering?

Yes. Bracing layouts, tie-down and connection details are checked against it. Without it, items are judged against AS 1684 and noted as such.

Will the frame inspection catch everything?

It catches what is visible. Some items are partly hidden by wrap or packing, and those are named in the report.
